Canada

In 2018, Canada was welcomed into the Digital Nations in recognition of its track record in leading digital government, including designing services around citizens’ needs and sharing open government practices.

Canada is dedicated to upholding the principles outlined in the Digital Nations Charter and remains committed to working with global counterparts to share best practices, solve common problems and identify improvements to digital services.

Since becoming a member, Canada has been an active Digital Nations participant. In 2020, as the Chair, Canada hosted the first fully virtual Digital Nations Ministerial Summit. Canada is currently serving as the Digital Nations Secretariat for 2026 and 2027 and is slated to Chair in 2030.

Canada is also a member of the Digital Nations Thematic Working Groups on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Identity, Government Efficiencies and Digital Investment, Digital Sovereignty, and Digital Governance.

In 2023, Canada led the Digital Nations AI Thematic Working Group in the creation of the Shared Approach to the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Government, which was endorsed at the Digital Nations Ministerial Summit in November of that year.

Canada’s work is guided by its Digital Ambition, a forward-facing strategic plan which outlines its priorities for digital transformation through four main outcomes:

  1. Services are user-centric, trusted and accessible.

  2. Data and information are foundational to service delivery and informed decision-making.

  3. Technology empowers innovation, efficiency and security.

  4. The workforce is digitally savvy and adaptable to the digital landscape.

Canada: List

“How will we accomplish these outcomes? Through our policies, our people and our technology. This is a shift to a more focused Digital Ambition. It ensures that all organizations in the federal government are aligned to the same outcomes as we continue to confront pressing digital challenges. I am confident that this will better structure the GC for one united goal: to better serve Canadians.”
